How to allow the main page display in Internet Explorer

Why it happens:

Internet Explorer has a very basic security feature that blocks "active content". It is designed to protect users from certain objects written with malicious intent, which can try to install viruses or other software without the user's consent (or even knowledge), solicit personal information, or hijack/redirect the user's browsing experience.

Internet Explorer does this by wholesale blocking all objects of certain types, which can seriously hinder viewing experience on the rest (99.99%) of the web that uses these objects as part of a site's visual appeal or functionality, and also makes web designers very cranky for having to write pages such as these to help people around this problem.

The main page on Helping Nature Heal (index.htm) contains a Macromedia Shockwave Object (.swf), which is a versatile format that provides for the scripting of interactive animation that is attempting to convey information about naturopathy and Helping Nature Heal to you. Fortunately, there is a easy-to-follow procedure to allow Internet Explorer to display the object (on this site only, so the security feature remains intact elsewhere):

How to fix it:

  1. On the bar at the top of the browser window, right click.
  2. On the menu that appears, click "Allow blocked content"...
  3. Read the warning that appears.
If you believe that it is safe to view the content, click "OK".

Why it happens:

The .swf object on the main page requires an additional piece of software to display correctly - a Shockwave Player (<3Mb in size). It won't expose your computer to any security flaws, provided you keep updated with the latest version.

How to fix it:

For Mozilla Firefox users, you should be able to directly click where the object should be - it should appear white, with a green jigsaw piece and the text "Click here to install missing plugin". The plugin should download and install automatically.

For Internet Explorer and other browser users, or if the above has not worked for Firefox users, you can download the plugin manually: http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/?promoid=BIOY.

How to make sure the site displays properly

Why it happens:

This site was designed for screen resolutions of 1024 wide x 768 high or bigger, for any screen aspect (4:3, 5:4, 16:10, and 16:9). The navigation menu and pictures on the left may not properly display in 800 x 600 resolution.

How to fix it :

  1. Minimise all open windows using the button (third from the top right) in each window
    - OR - hold the Windows button while you hit the D key (the "Show Desktop" shortcut)
  2. Right-click somewhere on your desktop (not on an icon)
  3. Select "Properties"
  4. Select the "Settings" tab
  5. Drag the screen resolution slider towards "More".
If you cannot do this, then unfortunately you cannot increase your resolution. The most likely cause of this is that the proper video card drivers are not installed (consult the manual).
  6. Click "Apply". If, after the screen flashes off, and stays black, your old settings will be restored in approx. 30 seconds, so do not press any keys or click the mouse. This way you can test whether you can increase your resolution before the change is permanent.
